Prepared Meal Delivery: When Ready-to-Eat Makes Sense

Prepared meals arrive cooked and portioned, ready to heat. They trade some cooking control for the shortest possible path to dinner.

Who this guide is for

  • Your evenings are unpredictable and cooking often does not happen.
  • You want single-serving meals rather than family portions.
  • You would rather heat a meal than follow a recipe.

How prepared meal delivery works

Prepared meals are cooked in a production kitchen, portioned into single-serving trays or containers, then delivered chilled or frozen in insulated packaging. At home the only step left is heating, usually in a microwave or oven within a window the provider specifies. Chilled meals are typically eaten within days; frozen meals keep far longer but need freezer space.

Because the food is already cooked, delivery logistics are tighter than for kits. Chilled networks in particular often cover fewer postal areas, so coverage is the first thing to confirm rather than the last.

VelaPlate is an independent discovery and comparison platform. We do not cook, sell or deliver food, we are not a medical or nutrition provider, and we do not set the prices, menus or delivery areas of the services listed here.

Who ready-to-eat genuinely suits

This format is at its best when evenings are unpredictable: shift work, long commutes, caring responsibilities, recovery from illness or surgery, or simply a household where cooking regularly does not happen. It is also well suited to single-serving eating, where cooking for one creates disproportionate waste.

It suits people less well when cooking is something they enjoy, when portions need adjusting for larger appetites, or when freezer and fridge space is limited. The trays take up more room than most people estimate.

Availability, and how we describe it

Ready-to-eat programmes are not available everywhere. Where our approved partners in a market offer meal kits rather than prepared meals, we say so plainly instead of relabelling a kit as a ready-made meal. If our questionnaire finds no exact match for the format you chose, it tells you and offers the alternatives that genuinely exist in your market.

Menus, storage guidance, heating instructions and delivery areas are all set by the provider and can change, so confirm them on their own site before ordering.

Key factors to consider

Storage and shelf life

Chilled and frozen meals have different storage needs and windows. Check what your fridge or freezer can hold.

Heating method

Confirm how meals are meant to be heated and whether that suits your kitchen or workplace.

Menu rotation

Ready-to-eat menus can feel repetitive faster than kits. Look at how many meals rotate each week.

Delivery coverage

Chilled delivery networks are often narrower than kit delivery. Check your postal area on the provider's site.

How to compare services

  • Chilled or frozen, and the storage space needed
  • Meals available per week and rotation
  • Delivery coverage for your postal area
  • Published ingredient and nutrition information

VelaPlate lists ready-to-eat programmes only where an approved partner genuinely offers them in your market. Where our current partners offer meal kits instead, we say so rather than mislabel a service.

Menus, ingredients, nutrition information, delivery areas and pricing are set by each provider and should be confirmed on their own website before ordering.

Questions to ask before ordering

  • Are meals delivered chilled or frozen, and how long do they keep?
  • How should they be heated, and does that suit my kitchen or workplace?
  • How many meals rotate on the menu each week?
  • Does the provider deliver to my postal area, and on which days?
  • Is ingredient and nutrition information published for each meal?

Conclusion

Prepared meals buy back time at the cost of control, which is an excellent trade for unpredictable weeks and a poor one for people who like to cook. Confirm coverage and storage first, then judge the menu on rotation and on how many meals you would actually order twice.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between prepared meals and meal kits?
Prepared meals arrive cooked and only need heating. Meal kits arrive as pre-portioned ingredients with a recipe to cook at home.
Are prepared meals available in every country VelaPlate covers?
No. Availability depends on the partner programmes approved for each market. Our partner grid shows what is currently available.
How much fridge or freezer space do I need?
It depends on plan size and whether meals arrive chilled or frozen. Providers list tray dimensions and storage guidance, and it is worth checking before choosing a larger plan.
Are prepared meals available in every market VelaPlate covers?
No. Availability depends on which partner programmes are approved for each market, and our results and comparison tables reflect what is genuinely available rather than filling gaps.
